Amenities

Q: Is there high-speed Internet service?

A: Yes. Each suite is equipped with a high-speed modem and wireless router, and has its own Internet security password. Service is provided free-of-charge.

Q: Who is responsible for cleaning the suite?

A: You and your roommates are responsible for cleaning your suite and for purchasing all the necessary cleaning supplies. There are periodic inspections to ensure that suites are being maintained.

Q: Are there laundry facilities?

A: Yes. There are coin-operated washers and dryers on the first and fourth floors of each residence building.

Q: What happens if I get sick or there is a medical emergency?

A: There is a walk-in medical clinic across the street from Georgian Green. Royal Victoria Hospital, a large regional hospital, is located beside Georgian College and is a 15-minute walk or five-minute drive from the residence. Barrie also has 911 emergency dispatch services.

Applying for a Room

Q: When should I apply for a room at the Georgian Green Residence?

A: You should apply for a room as soon you get your formal acceptance from Georgian College. The 257 rooms at Georgian Green are offered on a first come, first served basis.

Q: How do I apply for a room at Georgian Green Residence?

A: There are several easy steps you need to take to apply for a room. First, complete the seven-page “Offer to Lease”

Q: Do I need a guarantor if I am 18 years of age or older?

A: Yes. All applicants require a guarantor, regardless of their age.

Q: When will I find out if I have a room at Georgian Green?

A: You will receive notification by letter within a week of the date that your application and payment are received at the Residence Management office. You may want to send your application by Xpress Post or courier so that you can track the delivery date.

Q: What happens to my application deposit if I don’t get a room because Georgian Green is full?

A: Your full application deposit will be returned by mail. Your application forms will be kept on file and your name will be placed on a waiting list. If a room becomes available, you can re-send your deposit at that time.

Q: What happens if I change my mind before I move in?

A: Once an application has been accepted, you are obligated for all rental payments until the lease term ends or another student is found for your room, whichever happens first. The Residence Management office should be notified as quickly as possible so that staff can help you to find a replacement.

Meals

Q: Is a meal plan available?

A: Georgian Green Student Rez does not offer a meal plan, but there is a pre-paid student meal service available through Food Services at Georgian College. Each Georgian Green suite does have a full kitchen, so meals can be prepared and enjoyed at home.

Rent & Parking

Q: Do I have to pay my full rental term in advance?

A: No. After your first two deposits are paid, the remainder of your rent can be paid on a monthly basis with a series of post-dated cheques. The first rental deposit (the equivalent of one month’s rent) is due with your rental application; a second rental deposit (also the equivalent of one month’s rent) is due on or before the first day of the month before the college semester starts (August 1 for September; December 1 for January; April 1 for May).

These two deposits must be paid by certified cheque or money order if mailed; payments by debit or credit cards are accepted if made in person at the Residence Management office. You can also pay online with your credit card through this website.

Q: Can I pay my rent by credit card?

A: Yes, but there is an additional $25.00 service fee for each rental payment paid by credit card. So, for six rental payments, the total in service fees would be $150.00.

Q: Why must my guarantor provide a credit card number?

A: Your guarantor supplies a credit card number and authorization to pay for past due rent, damage repairs, cleaning fees and other miscellaneous charges. This process is more convenient than other financial methods. The card will be used to collect any unpaid fees, but an invoice with a due date is always sent before any charges are applied to a credit card. This gives you a chance to first pay by another method.

Q: Do I still have to pay rent if I move out?

A: Yes, you will have to pay rent until the end of your lease term, or until a new person is found to move into your room. If you are thinking of moving out, please inform the Residence Management office as soon as possible. Staff can help you find someone to take your room.

Q: How much does it cost to park at Georgian Green?

A: Residence parking is $25.00 per month, with the entire term payable in advance. So, eight months of parking is $200, which is due at the beginning of your lease term. A pro-rated refund is available if parking is cancelled at any time.

Security & Maintenance

Q: What type of security is provided?

A: There are keyed doors to all buildings, suites and bedrooms. There are also digital video surveillance cameras in the lobby areas and an intercom system. Students can watch who comes and leaves the lobby area on a designated TV channel.

Q: Are there Resident Assistants who live on the premises?

A: Yes. There are two Resident Assistants in each building.

Q: What do I do if something needs to be fixed?

A: You should complete a maintenance report. The specific form can be obtained online, from the Resident Assistant or at the onsite Residence Management office. This form is given to the residence’s maintenance crew. Depending on the problem, repairs are usually completed within 72 hours.

Suitemates

Q: How do you match suitemates?

A: When you sign up to live at the residence, we ask you to complete a comprehensive questionnaire that asks all about you, from your age, hobbies and music preferences to your study habits and whether you are a nighthawk or an early bird. This information helps management in arranging the most compatible suite teams possible.

Q: When will I find out who I’m rooming with?

A: Suite assignments are revealed on move-in day, in case there are any last minute changes.

Q: Can I share the suite with a friend, if I make this request in advance?

A: Yes, as long as your friend also indicates on his/her application form that he/she would like to live with you.

Q: I just found out that someone I know is moving into residence, and I’ve already submitted my application form. Can we still room together?

A: Yes, provided you make a request before residents start to move in, and both of you send an email with this request to the Residence Management office

Q: Can men and women share a suite?

A: Yes, but only if everyone in the suite knows each other and submits a signed letter to the Residence Management office stating that they want to live in a co-ed suite. Otherwise, apartment teams are all-female or all-male. Residences are co-ed.

Q: What if I don’t like my suitemates? Can I switch rooms?

A: Every effort is made to ensure suitemates are as compatible as possible. Each problem is addressed on an individual basis, taking into account students’ concerns and rooming availability.

Suites & Rooms

Q: Is the suite furnished?

A: Yes. Each suite’s common area is furnished with a sofa, love seat, coffee table, end table and 27-inch TV. In the kitchen/dining room, there is a kitchen table & chairs, full-size fridge, stove/oven, cupboards and window coverings. A microwave oven is not included.

Q: Are the bedrooms furnished?

A: Yes. Each bedroom has a twin-size bed; desk & desk chair; dresser; closet; electric baseboard heater; window coverings; and lockable bedroom door. You may wish to bring a small bar fridge and/or microwave oven to keep in your bedroom.

Q: How big are the bedrooms?

A: Each bedroom is approximately 10 ft. X 13 ft.

Q: Is there cable TV in the bedroom?

A: There are no TVs in individual bedrooms, but each suite is equipped with a 27-inch TV and cable access in the living room. Most residents use the Internet and their computers to watch TV and/or DVDs in their bedrooms.
