Read This

Although heading off to college is an exciting experience for many students, others wonder if they’re making the right decision. These feelings of uncertainty may intensify when you arrive on campus and see other people thriving. It’s important to realize that many students do change their college plans. For instance, it’s completely normal to switch majors, rethink your career path, or change your ideas about graduate school. Instead of rushing into a decision, though, make sure you take the time to acknowledge how you’re feeling and consider what would be the best course of action for you.

Embrace Your Feelings

It can be anxiety inducing to realize the plans you had for college may not actually be what you want. However, it’s critical to acknowledge that this doesn’t mean you’ve failed and won’t be successful. In fact, it’s logical that not everything will go as you expected.

If you find you dislike or struggle with many of your required courses, there’s no need to stick to the path you’ve set for yourself. Alternatively, it may be that general education classes, electives, or classes for your minor grab you more or you learn about career opportunities you weren’t aware of before. If it makes sense to change your plans, seriously consider doing so.

Talk to an Adviser

Before making any big moves, talk to someone. Your academic adviser is your best resource because he or she will have helped many students in your position in the past. An adviser will be able to tell you more about the implications for changing your plans and ensure you make the right decision.

Attend Workshops

Other resources available to you on campus include information sessions and workshops. Check your college email to see when these are happening and attend any that are relevant to you.

Explore All Your Options

You may have started college with a clear idea of what you wanted to do, only to realize there are many more routes available than you had imagined. Although this can be confusing, it’s worthwhile taking advantage of your options before it’s too late. Think about where your strengths lie and what you’re passionate about.

Bear in mind, it’s certainly possible to pursue multiple interests. For example, you could declare a minor, join extracurriculars, or volunteer. These options may be more realistic than seeking a career in a competitive field. Having said that, there are other ways to stand out in a competitive industry, such as by continuing your education beyond college. If you discover a deep passion for a specific topic, you may enjoy the chance to research or study it in depth.

Adjusting to college life is extra difficult when you lose your privacy and personal space. Luckily, there’s a simple fix: you just need to move off campus. A great option for Fleming College housing is Severn Court. You’ll still be living with other students, but you’ll have your own room in a fully-furnished apartment, complete with its own kitchen and living room. Plus, you can choose between traditional housing and all-gender housing, meaning you can pick whatever makes you more comfortable. Apply now to secure your spot.

Although heading off to college is an exciting experience for many students, others wonder if they’re making the right decision.
