You connect with others over shared tastes, listen to music with friends (can you imagine a party without music?), and incorporate music into all kinds of routines — from studying to cleaning your apartment. There’s a good reason why music has such a major role in student life: it has a large number of benefits.

Study Better
There has long been a debate about whether listening to music distracts students or is conducive to studying. However, research has found that music engages the parts of the brain responsible for focus, making predictions, and categorizing information — all crucial functions when studying.

Improve Memory Recall
One reason music is great for helping you study is it improves memory recall. This is because music is strongly linked to emotions — the part of the brain involved in emotions also processes music. When an event is linked to music, it’s easier to remember. Similarly, connecting new information to music makes it easier to remember that information later, by recalling the music.

Stress Reliever
Unfortunately, there are all sorts of reasons to feel stressed when you’re a student — from adapting to your new life to worrying about your grades. Music can help you regulate your emotions and reduce stress. For instance, if you’re not in the mood to study, put on your favourite music and you’ll feel your motivation increase.
Music is particularly ideal if you’re anxious about exams. It has the same impact on reducing anxiety as receiving a massage. Especially effective is some uplifting hip hop.

Cope with High-Pressure Situations
Music may be the solution for all sorts of high-pressure situations, not just exams. For instance, if you have a match with your sports team or a big event with your debate club, listen to some upbeat music to put yourself in the right frame of mind. You should find it improves your performance.

Treat Insomnia
If you’re struggling to fall asleep (such as if your mind is too active with all the new information you’ve been learning or you’re worrying about something), music may help you relax. Classical music, in particular, is an effective solution for insomnia in students.

Pain Relief
A last amazing benefit of music is it may ease physical pain. If you’re injured or suffering from a bad headache, you may find it extra difficult to focus on your schoolwork. Putting on some music will reduce your perception of pain, making it feel less intense. This will prevent pain from stopping you continuing to live your life.
One of the worst things about sharing a room is the disagreement over what music to play. When you have your own space, you’re in complete control over your playlist. Severn Court provides you with Fleming College student housing where you’ll have a fully-furnished, private bedroom. With a door lock and an individual thermostat, you’ll feel completely independent. Best of all, you’ll still be just a short walk across the street from campus. Apply for your spot now.

Music is a big part of many students’ lives.
