Should You Take a Break from Your Job Search?

April 14, 2023 Posted by Gail Uncategorized

It’s demotivating to apply to jobs and never hear back or just occasionally receive an interview but never an offer. You may need a part-time job to help afford your expenses at college or you could already be looking ahead to your graduation. In either case, taking a break from your job search could be the right move. Nonetheless, there are disadvantages to consider as well. The best way to decide if you should take a break is to weigh the pros and cons.

Pro: It Gives You the Chance to Reflect on Your Strategy

Consider if there could be an underlying reason why your job search has been unsuccessful so far. Do you have unrealistic expectations? Are you applying to jobs that require skills or qualifications you lack? Perhaps your resume, application letters, or interview technique need work — the career center at your college can help you with all of these things. Try to identify where you’ve been going wrong to make adjustments when you begin your job search again.

It may also be that you need to expand your network. Stepping away from your job search will free up time to improve your LinkedIn profile, connect with people online, and attend networking events like job fairs on campus.

Con: The Perfect Job Could Pass You By

There’s a risk that, if you stop searching, you may miss out on a great opportunity. The only way to ensure you don’t miss anything is to stay constantly alert for new job posts.

Pro: You May Need a Break

If you’re feeling exhausted by your never-ending job search, a break could be the best thing for you. It’s possible your applications reflect your lack of enthusiasm and this is the reason you’re not receiving interviews.

Con: You May Lose Momentum

If you stop now, you may find it more difficult to return to your job search later. Remembering how stressed it made you and how it led to nothing can be a big turn off. Plus, you may lose some of the connections you made — there’s always the chance that, with just a little more time, you’ll find the perfect job.

Pro: You’ll Have More Time for Your Studies

While you’re at college, your studies need to take priority. Focusing on improving your grades and learning additional skills can help you land your dream job when you graduate. You can also use your time for other activities that are central to the college experience, such as socializing and participating in extracurriculars. College will be over before you know it and you’ll never have these opportunities again — whereas you’ll have plenty of opportunities to work!

If you’re searching for a job to afford expenses at college, an alternative to working could be to move into affordable student rentals. Peterborough students can find a new home at Severn Court. The suites are fully furnished and the rent is all inclusive, meaning you don’t need to worry about expenses like furniture, utilities, and internet. Apply now to secure your lease.
